Formula 1 has implemented a new tire rule for the Monaco Grand Prix, requiring all drivers to use each of the three available tire compounds during the race. The change is intended to address the past difficulty of overtaking at the Monaco circuit and inject more excitement into the event.
The decision follows concerns that previous races lacked strategic variation, leading to predictable outcomes. In 2024, a first-lap incident prompted most teams to switch to hard tires early, resulting in a largely uneventful race controlled by Charles Leclerc.
While some beleive the rule is an overreaction, others point to past races where unpredictable weather created more thrilling contests. However, track modifications to improve overtaking proved unfeasible, pushing officials toward the tire regulation change.
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton voiced his support for the initiative. “If you keep doing the same thing over and over and over again, you get the same result. And so I think it’s cool that they’re trying something different,” Hamilton said.
The new regulation introduces strategic complexities, considering the varying durability of each tire compound. Mercedes driver George russell noted the potential for both advantages and disadvantages. “If somebody starts on the soft and there is a red flag or safety car in the first five laps, they have a massive advantage,” Russell said. He added that well-timed safety cars could force drivers to push harder than in previous years.
What’s next
The impact of the new tire rule will be closely watched during the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix. Teams will need to carefully consider their strategies to maximize performance and capitalize on any opportunities that arise during the race.
