US and Indonesia Crack Down on Monkey Torture Ring
Updated June 14, 2025
Authorities in the U.S. and Indonesia are continuing to make arrests related to a global network involved in commissioning and creating videos depicting the torture of monkeys. The investigation, spurred by animal rights organizations, has uncovered a disturbing trend of individuals seeking increasingly graphic content.
One group, initially called “Million Tears,” was forced to relocate and rebrand itself as “the trail of trillion tears” after being ousted from its original platform. The group sought more extreme videos, with one member allegedly dismissing an initial offering as “the village idiot version,” indicating a desire for higher-quality, more sadistic content. This pursuit of increasingly disturbing content highlights the depravity at the heart of the monkey torture network.
The investigation gained momentum in 2021 when leaked communications from the “million tears” group were shared with animal rights organizations, who then alerted authorities. However, it took several years to apprehend and prosecute the leaders of the monkey torture ring.
In 2024, Ronald Bedra, of OH, pleaded guilty to commissioning the videos and mailing a thumb drive containing 64 monkey torture videos to an accomplice in WI. In a letter to the judge, Bedra’s mother suggested he “must have been undergoing some mental crisis” and recalled his childhood love for family pets. Bedra was sentenced to 54 months in prison late last year.Family members reported he also lost his job, wife, and children.
Two more alleged co-conspirators were indicted and arrested in April 2025, with their cases unsealed this week. Two other co-conspirators remain uncharged. Separately, in May 2025, 11 other Americans were indicted for their participation in other monkey torture groups. This group allegedly paid a minor in Indonesia to commit the acts on camera.
Indonesian police have also arrested multiple videographers in response to complaints from animal rights groups, demonstrating the international scope of the crackdown on monkey torture.
What’s next
Investigations are ongoing, and further arrests are expected as authorities continue to dismantle these networks and bring those involved in animal abuse to justice. The international nature of these groups highlights the need for continued vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies worldwide to combat animal cruelty.
