Two young women died Sunday, May 3, 2026, while attempting to reach the United Kingdom from northern France in a small boat, according to regional officials.
The victims, believed to be of Sudanese origin and aged about 20, were among 82 people on board the vessel. The boat set out to sea during the night between Saturday, May 2, and Sunday, May 3, but began to drift after the engine failed to start, regional government official Christophe Marx told reporters.
Rescue and Recovery Operations
French authorities launched a rescue operation that recovered 17 people at sea, who were subsequently taken to the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer. The remaining 65 people on board eventually ran aground on a beach near Neufchatel-Hardelot, located about 12 kilometres (seven miles) south of Boulogne-sur-Mer.
The two women were found dead inside the boat
, Marx said. Among the survivors, 13 people suffered moderate injuries and three others sustained serious wounds. Some of the seriously injured migrants suffered chemical burns caused by a mixture of fuel and sea water.
The injured survivors were taken to a hospital for treatment. Marx stated that they will be interviewed by border police to determine who is responsible for this crossing
.
A Pattern of Fatal Crossings
This incident marks the third fatal event at the French-British border in just over a month. On April 1, 2026, two migrants died off the coast of Gravelines in northern France. This was followed by another tragedy on April 9, 2026, when two men and two women died after being swept away by currents.
According to an AFP tally based on official French and British sources, at least 29 migrants died at sea in the region in 2025.
Security and Border Agreements
The deaths occur as the United Kingdom and France implement a new three-year agreement on security operations intended to stop small boat crossings. Under the deal, the British government will increase its financial contribution to the cost of border security, with reports indicating Britain will pay France up to 660 million pounds ($895.8 million).
As part of the arrangement, France is increasing the number of police and gendarmes patrolling its coastline. French officials have indicated that the number of arrivals in Britain so far in 2026 has been drastically cut compared to 2025.
An investigation is ongoing to formally confirm the nationalities and identities of the two victims.
