The internal revolt centers on proposed tax increases and insufficient relief for citizens, with members of the agricultural and financial working groups moving to block key components of the legislative package.

Agriculture and Finance Groups Reject Key Measures

According to reporting by T-Online and Bild, opposition within the conservative union is broad. All 12 members of the agriculture working group voted against introducing a sugar tax during a session, arguing that it directly violates coalition agreement commitments that rule out tax increases. Members of the finance working group expressed similar discontent. Lawmakers criticized federal plans to only partially adjust the cold progression—the stealth tax increase caused by inflation—for the upcoming year, demanding a complete adjustment instead.

Lawmaker Criticism and Coalition Pressures

Individual politicians voiced sharp criticism over the direction of the financial policies. CSU finance politician Florian Dorn described the current income tax reform proposals as peinlich und zu mickrig (embarrassing and too puny), according to T-Online. CDU colleague Olav Gutting reportedly told the session, Ich mach’ das nicht mehr mit (I am not going along with this anymore). Budget politicians within the union also challenged Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil.

Social Wing Demands Deeper Relief

The internal pushback follows recent regional election results in Saxony-Anhalt, prompting the Christian Democratic Workers’ Association (CDA) to demand significantly greater financial relief for citizens and businesses. CDA Chairman Dennis Radtke told the Rheinische Post on September 10, 2026, that the current plans fall far short of what is necessary.

Mindestens sollte die kalte Progression 2027 ausgeglichen werden, so wie das jeder anderen Bundesregierung der letzten Jahre auch gelungen ist.
