This marks the first proof-of-concept machine of its kind, representing a critically important step toward establishing a permanent human presence on the Moon.
Harnessing Solar Power for Lunar Construction
The device utilizes concentrated sunlight to achieve temperatures exceeding 1,300 degrees Celsius (2,372 degrees fahrenheit), effectively melting lunar soil – also known as regolith – into shaped bricks. A parabolic reflector focuses solar energy, which is then channeled through a fiber optic bundle, achieving a concentration ratio over 3,000 times normal intensity, according to the deep Space Exploration Laboratory (DSEL) in Hefei.

The development of this lunar brick maker directly supports China’s aspiring plans for the International Lunar Research station (ILRS). the ILRS, a collaborative scientific experimental facility, is projected to be constructed in two phases: a basic model by 2035 in the lunar south pole region, and an expanded model in the 2040s. On-site brick production will be essential for building roads,landing pads,and habitats,reducing reliance on costly and complex Earth-based material transport.

Alongside the lunar brick maker, the four-day event in Anhui showcased other advanced technologies, including an ultra-lightweight reusable heat shield for rockets, a computational-lithography platform for chipmaking, a non-invasive brain-computer-interface acquisition system, and a universal technology foundation for clever robots.
