More than 200 tons of fish died and smelled bad in Dong Nai

Hundreds of tons of dead fish float white in Song May lake (Trang Bom district, Dong Nai) due to the release of water by the construction unit of the lake renovation project, causing the water level to drop and the fish to lack oxygen, leading to mass deaths.

According to records on April 29, dead fish floating white in the Song May lake bed area are mainly tilapia, silver carp, carp and catfish. Dead fish cause environmental pollution, seriously affecting the lives of people in the area.

Mr. Bui Thanh Binh (living near Song May lake, Bac Son commune, Trang Bom district) said that the strong smell of dead fish is very unpleasant, especially on hot days. His house had to be closed all day to avoid bad odors.

Song May Lake has an area of more than 300 hectares, is an irrigation water reservoir for Trang Bom district and Vinh Cuu district. Dong Nai province assigned the Provincial Military Command to cultivate aquaculture on the water surface area.

The cause of the fish death was due to the project to renovate the irrigation dam and dredge Song May Lake of Dong Nai Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited. The release of water combined with drought weather causes the water level to drop and oxygen in the water to decrease, leading to mass fish deaths.

Currently, the project’s construction unit is constantly sending people to pick up dead fish, but due to the large area, they can’t do it in time. It is estimated that more than 200 tons of fish have died in recent days.

Leaders of Trang Bom District People’s Committee have grasped the incident and requested the construction unit to urgently implement remedial measures to avoid causing environmental pollution.
