Tragic Death of Amarena, Beloved Mother Bear in Abruzzo, Italy

Seoul = Yonhap News: Local media reported on the 1st of September (local time) that a mother bear, affectionately known as ‘Amarena’, was tragically shot and killed in Abruzzo, central Italy, leaving the local community in a state of mourning and outrage.

The incident occurred the previous night near the National Parks of Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise, when a man encountered Amarena and fatally shot her. The National Park Service promptly identified the perpetrator and handed him over to the police.

During the police investigation, the man claimed to have acted out of fear, stating, “I was scared and shot, but I didn’t intend to kill her.”

The Marsica brown bear, often referred to as the ‘mascot’ of the Abruzzo region, is an extremely rare species, with only about 60 remaining individuals. As a critically endangered species, their loss is a devastating blow to conservation efforts.

Known for their calm disposition, Marsica brown bears rarely display aggression towards humans.

The National Park Service has expressed concerns regarding the survival of Amarena’s cubs, as it is challenging for them to fend for themselves. Currently, the whereabouts of the two cubs are unknown, and efforts are underway to locate them.

The local community affectionately named this mother bear Amarena, which means black cherry in Italian. Amarena had become a familiar sight in town and was known for her fondness for black cherries. Please watch the accompanying video for a glimpse of her.
