A mother who indiscriminately beat her 30-year-old son to death while preparing for a civil service exam at a temple has been sentenced to seven years in prison.
On the 20th, Daegu District Court’s Criminal Division 12 (Chief Lee Gyu-cheol) sentenced a 63-year-old mother A (63), who had been charged with beating her own son to death (murder) at a temple in Cheongdo-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, for homicide and 7 years in prison.
The court explained the reason for the sentencing, saying, “The victim was beaten for a long time and died. However, the court ruled that there was no intentionality in the fact that Mr. A stopped the assault and attempted emergency measures when his son lost consciousness.
A was arrested in March last year on charges of hitting the head of his son (35) 2,167 times in 2 hours and 30 minutes with bamboo sticks and feet, etc.
Person A, who has been attending this temple since about 10 years ago, has been staying at the temple since June of last year and is known to have committed this kind of crime when her son, who had been preparing for the civil service exam, said he would inform the outside of the temple’s internal problems.
Person A indiscriminately assaulted the head, upper body, and area around the knee of the son who was kneeling with a bamboo stick about 1m in length handed over by the governor in the temple’s tea room. If he collapsed due to assault, he got up, knelt again, and repeated the assault. When he tried to get out of the car because of the pain, he pulled him to his knees and continued assaulting. Unable to overcome the pain, when his son collapsed, he repeatedly stepped on his head and beat him with a stick.
At the time of the assault, two members of the congregation watched, but they considered it a discipline that parents could do and did not stop them. It was confirmed that the son who died did not resist his mother’s beating, but begged for forgiveness, saying “I was wrong” and was beaten with his whole body. The assault scene was captured on closed circuit (CC) TV.
The investigation into the corruption inside the temple, which was the beginning of the assault, was canceled after the governor passed away in February.
