Michigan State University has reaffirmed its strategic roadmap for the future with a refreshed version of MSU 2030: Excellence for Global impact. The update, finalized in July 2025, builds upon the original plan endorsed in 2021, sharpening the university’s focus and adapting to a changing higher education landscape while remaining deeply rooted in Spartan values.
A Legacy of Land-Grant Principles
MSU 2030 is more than just a strategic plan; it’s a commitment to the university’s foundational principles as a land-grant institution. The plan emphasizes accessibility, affordability, and a dedication to service – values that have defined Michigan State since its inception.President Kevin Guskiewicz initiated the refresh in 2024 to ensure the plan continues to reflect these core tenets, alongside a pursuit of innovation and global leadership.
“MSU 2030 reflects the values and traditions that long ago established Michigan State University as an accessible and welcoming institution,” said Bill Beekman, Vice President for Strategic Initiatives, who led the refresh process. “The steering committee constructed a plan with a stable framework that encourages adaptability, and updates to the plan are an integral part of that dynamic strategy.”
Key Goals and Measurable Outcomes
The refreshed MSU 2030 maintains enterprising, yet achievable, goals designed to propel the university forward. These include:
Student Success: Increasing the six-year average graduation rate for undergraduate students to 86% by 2030. This builds on the success of programs like the Spartan Tuition Advantage, expanding access to an MSU education. Research Excellence: Achieving $1 billion in total research expenditures by 2030, fostering discovery and innovation across diverse disciplines.
* National impact: Tripling funding from the National Institutes of health (NIH) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC), amplifying MSU’s contributions to critical health and societal challenges.
These measurable outcomes are designed to demonstrate MSU’s commitment to tangible progress and accountability. The plan was intentionally designed with a stable framework allowing for adjustments as needed, a process overseen by the MSU 2030 executive sponsors and the Strategic Plan Implementation steering Committee.
A Collaborative and Adaptive Approach
The development and refresh of MSU 2030 have been characterized by broad collaboration, engaging faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders across the Spartan community. The original plan was the result of 18 months of collaborative effort, and the recent update continued this inclusive approach.
“We appreciate the leadership of President Guskiewicz, the executive sponsors and the Strategic Plan Implementation Steering Committee to refresh, reframe, reimagine and reaffirm a strategic plan capable of making MSU the nation’s leading contemporary land-grant university,” stated Board of Trustees Chair Kelly tebay.
The university will continue to monitor progress through annual reports to the Board of Trustees, ensuring openness and accountability.
