New Mexico is preparing for a return of precipitation following a period of dry conditions, with showers and thunderstorms forecast to return to northern and central regions of the state on April 6 and April 7, 2026.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, these weather systems will bring light precipitation, with many locations likely to receive less than 0.10 inches. The incoming storms are expected to be accompanied by gusty and erratic winds, which may cause abrupt crosswinds for high-profile vehicles and brief restrictions in visibility due to blowing dust.

The forecast for Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026, remains sunny and dry. Temperatures are trending closer to the seasonal average, with typical highs for this time of year ranging between 68 and 69 degrees. Winds at the Sunport have relaxed to under 10 miles per hour, providing a reprieve from the breezier conditions and fire weather concerns observed on April 4.

Temperature Outlook and Overnight Risks

While daytime temperatures on April 5 have been comfortable, the region faces another chilly night. Forecasters expect a low of 43 degrees in Albuquerque and 36 degrees in Santa Fe on Sunday night.

The National Weather Service has warned of a potential freeze in several locations, including Santa Fe and Farmington. Because many plants are currently blooming ahead of schedule, officials advise residents to take action to protect sensitive vegetation.

a freeze warning is in effect from midnight on April 5 until approximately 9:00 a.m. On April 6 for portions of southern Colorado, specifically including Montezuma and La Plata counties.

Fire Danger and Wind Alerts

Despite the upcoming rain, fire danger remains a significant concern in other parts of the state. Gusty winds and low relative humidity are expected to increase fire risks across northeast New Mexico on April 5 and April 6.

The National Weather Service advises the public to avoid open flames, keep vehicles off dry grass, and properly discard cigarettes to prevent new fire starts. There is a specific risk that lightning strikes from the incoming storms could ignite new fires in receptive fuels.

In southern and southwestern New Mexico, the forecast includes a low chance of light showers, sprinkles, or virga, accompanied by gusty winds and dry lightning strikes.

Long-Term Forecast

Following the showers and thunderstorms on April 6 and April 7, temperatures are expected to remain steady through Tuesday. A warming trend is projected to arrive on Wednesday, April 8, and Thursday, April 9.

After a quiet Wednesday, precipitation chances are expected to return late in the week. The highest probability for this subsequent round of moisture is forecast for eastern New Mexico.

Meteorologists suggest that if an upper low tracking across the Southwest is able to tap into moisture from the Gulf, the region could see more significant amounts of rain and snow.
