[메디컬투데이=남연희 기자] Research findings have shown that mugwort, a mugwort-like vegetable, can help prevent vascular aging. Mugwort, rich in antioxidants such as vitamin C, protects vascular endothelial cells and inhibits vascular aging.

Dr. Lee Ae-shin’s team at the Aging Metabolism Research Center of the Korea Food Research Institute announced on the 2nd that through in vitro research using vascular endothelial cells, corona corona was confirmed to prevent vascular dysfunction such as arterial hypertension by inhibiting the aging of endothelial cells.

Dr. Lee’s team induced aging of endothelial cells by adding a substance (hydrogen peroxide) that generates active oxygen, the “main culprit” of aging vascular endothelial cells, then administered crown extract and examined the degree of inhibition of vascular endothelial cell aging. .

Consequentially. In endothelial cells that were not given corona extract, aging occurred about three times more than when no stimulant was added, whereas in endothelial cells that were given corona extract , aging occurred only 1.1 to 1.5 times more.

Furthermore, when hydrogen peroxide was injected into vascular endothelial cells, the amount of nitric oxide (NO), involved in the contraction and relaxation of blood vessels, immediately decreased by about 40%. When crown extract was added, nitric oxide increased by approximately 80%. This means that mugwort significantly increases the production of nitric oxide, which is involved in vasodilation.

Dr Lee said: “The increased nitric oxide from mugwort extract is a vasodilator-inducing substance that lowers blood pressure and helps prevent diseases such as hypertension and atherosclerosis.” He added: “Nitric oxide dilates blood vessels, inhibits the proliferation of vascular endothelium.” cells and “Three scientists who discovered that blocking platelet function prevents blood from clotting were awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.”

Vascular endothelial cells are the innermost cells of blood vessels. As these cells age, vascular dysfunction occurs, such as blood vessels becoming hard.

Dr Lee said: “Cellular aging refers to a state in which cells no longer divide” and highlighted: “As vascular endothelial cells age, the risk of developing vascular diseases such as hypertension and l ‘arteriosclerosis”.

Dr. Lee’s team presented the results of this study (cosagewort extract prevents aging of vascular endothelial cells) in the recent issue of Current Issues in Molecular Biology, an international journal in the field of molecular biology.

Dr Lee said: “The importance of this study is that we have found scientific evidence that mugwort works as a food that prevents vascular aging” and added: “We will clearly identify the positive effects of mugwort on blood vessels through in vivo studies and research on experimental animals.” “He said.
