José Mujica Critiques Latin American Leaders

José “Pepe” Mujica, former president of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015, criticized several Latin American leaders, including Cristina Kirchner, Nicolás Maduro, Daniel Ortega, and Evo Morales. In an interview with AFP, Mujica highlighted issues such as the lack of generational change in politics, authoritarianism, and democratic regression in the region.

Mujica expressed concern about Kirchner’s continued influence in Argentina, stating, “There is the old Kirchner in Argentina, leading the Peronism. Instead of becoming a wise counselor and allowing new generations to emerge, she is still there. It is hard for them to let go!”

He recalled past comments regarding Kirchner that sparked controversy, where he labeled her “worse than the one-eyed man,” emphasizing a long-standing criticism alongside moments of praise.

Mujica also spoke about Evo Morales, the former president of Bolivia, mentioning his difficulties with the current government under Luis Arce. He remarked, “There is a time to arrive and a time to leave… Morales’ situation is inconceivable.”

While acknowledging Lula da Silva’s presidency in Brazil, Mujica noted the absence of a successor, stating, “Lula is nearing 80 and has no replacement. That is Brazil’s misfortune.”

Regarding authoritarianism, Mujica reflected on historical U.S. interventions in Latin America and stressed that countries must solve their problems independently. He discussed Venezuela’s situation, asserting, “The change will come from within.”

Mujica critiqued Maduro’s regime, claiming it cannot be equated with Chavez’s earlier government. He emphasized that many original Chavez supporters are now marginalized or persecuted.

He also addressed Nicaragua, criticizing the aftermath of the Sandinista Revolution: “It is incredible how this revolution against Somoza has ended up with such a situation.”

On Cuba, Mujica acknowledged its long-standing one-party rule, comparing it to relations with China and Vietnam. He stressed his disagreement with authoritarian practices but accepted existing dialogues with those countries.

Furthermore, Mujica commented on the delayed trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union. He explained that French farmers block the deal, stating, “It won’t happen because French farmers don’t want it. They dominate French culture.” Despite this, he expressed understanding for their position, noting, “If I were French, I would support the farmers.”

The Mercosur-EU agreement, established in 2019, has faced resistance from countries like France, Italy, and Poland due to agricultural pressure. If ratified, it would allow Mercosur countries to increase exports of various agricultural products to the EU.

Mujica concluded that European countries use environmental and social standards as pretexts for protecting their interests, reinforcing his view that they cannot compete effectively against Mercosur products.

These discussions highlight Mujica’s insights into the political landscape in Latin America, revealing his pragmatic approach to leadership and international relations.
