Multiple People Hospitalized After Vehicle Hits Crowd in Dallas Bishop Arts
Dallas Police confirmed multiple individuals were hospitalized after a vehicle struck a crowd in the Bishop Arts district on Thursday night, according to a statement released by the department. The incident occurred around 9:45 p.m. CDT in the popular restaurant and retail area, which is known for its artsy vibe and weekend gatherings. No fatalities were reported, but authorities described the injuries as “serious but not life-threatening,” according to a press briefing.
The Dallas Police Department identified the suspect as a 29-year-old man who was arrested at the scene. Officers said the individual was driving a black SUV that intentionally collided with pedestrians before coming to a stop. “This was a deliberate act,” said Detective Maria Gonzalez, a department spokesperson. “We are investigating whether there was a specific target or if this was an act of malice.” The suspect has not been charged yet, and no motive has been disclosed.
Fox 4 Dallas-Fort Worth, which first reported the incident, cited hospital officials who stated four people were admitted to Parkland Memorial Hospital and one to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center. The injured included a 32-year-old woman with a broken leg, a 45-year-old man with head trauma, a 28-year-old man with spinal injuries, and a 16-year-old boy with multiple lacerations. All patients were reported in stable condition as of Friday morning.
Bishop Arts, a historic neighborhood in northeast Dallas, has seen a surge in foot traffic in recent months due to its revitalized downtown core. The area, which features boutique shops and eateries, was largely evacuated following the collision. Local business owners described the scene as “chaotic” but noted that most shops reopened by Friday afternoon. “It’s heartbreaking to see something like this happen here,” said Sarah Lin, owner of a nearby coffee shop. “We’re just glad no one died.”
Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson addressed the incident in a statement, calling it “a tragic reminder of the fragility of public safety.” He announced plans to increase police presence in high-traffic areas across the city. “We are reviewing security measures to prevent such incidents in the future,” Johnson said. The mayor also urged residents to report any suspicious activity.
The Texas Department of Public Safety is assisting with the investigation, according to a spokesperson. Authorities have not released a timeline of events but said they are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses. A preliminary report is expected within the next 48 hours.
This incident marks the third vehicle-related attack in Dallas this year, according to city records. In March, a driver struck a group of pedestrians near a downtown transit hub, injuring six people. In May, a separate incident involved a car crashing into a parade, resulting in two injuries. Officials have not linked the cases but have emphasized the need for heightened vigilance.
Residents of Bishop Arts have expressed mixed reactions. While some called for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, others urged caution in labeling the incident as a crime. “We don’t know the full story yet,” said community organizer Jamal Carter. “Let’s focus on supporting the victims and ensuring justice, not jumping to conclusions.”
The Dallas Police Department continues to investigate. A press conference is scheduled for 10 a.m. CDT on Saturday to provide further updates.
