Museveni Urges Uganda Sports Leaders to Promote Public Health

Entebbe, Uganda-President yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called on Uganda’s sports fraternity to partner with the Ministry of Health to promote public health education, focusing on nutrition and discipline among youth. He made the appeal at a luncheon honoring national sports teams at State House.
Museveni suggested regular radio broadcasts by sports figures in collaboration with district health officials. he stressed the need for families to learn about balanced diets, moving beyond basic staples.
The event celebrated the Uganda U17 Men’s national Football Team (The Cubs) for qualifying for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2025. The Senior Women’s National Basketball Team (The Gazelles) were also recognized for winning the FIBA AfroBasket 2025 Zone 5 championships in Egypt, securing their spot in the AfroBasket 2025 Women’s Championship in Côte d’Ivoire.
The Uganda Lady Cranes 15’s, the Women’s National Rugby Team, were honored for their triumph in the Rugby Africa Cup Division 1 tournament in Côte d’Ivoire. Their victories earned them promotion to the Africa Performance Division.
Museveni credited the teams’ success to Uganda’s peace, stability, and improved education system. He noted the country is only beginning to realize its sports potential.
“I am very happy to be here to celebrate these three groups with Maama,” Museveni said. “Congratulations, and may the Almighty God bless you.”
First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet Museveni, highlighted the role of sports in fostering national unity and stability. She thanked President Museveni for prioritizing sports infrastructure advancement.
“Your Excellency, I want to start by thanking you for always making the time to celebrate our young people who continue to raise our flag globally,” she said.
Hon. joyce Moriku Kaducu,the State Minister for Primary Education,said the event affirmed the nation’s value of sports. She praised the First lady’s leadership in sports development.
