Updated may 31, 2025
Tesla CEO Elon Musk faced questions about his alleged drug use during former President Donald Trump’s campaign at a recent White House press event. Musk, a major backer of Trump’s 2024 campaign, dismissed the inquiry, referencing a New York Times article detailing the allegations.
During the event,Fox News reporter Peter Doocy attempted to question Musk about the Times’ report, which claimed Musk’s ketamine use “went well beyond occasional uses” and included instances of ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms.Musk interrupted Doocy, preventing him from completing the question.
Musk questioned the newspaper’s credibility, asking if it was ”the same publication that got a Pulitzer Prize for false reporting on… Russia-gate?” He referenced articles about Trump’s first presidential campaign and a Florida court ruling regarding a defamation lawsuit Trump filed against the Pulitzer Prize board.

Musk’s comments alluded to a Florida appeals court decision that declined to pause Trump’s defamation lawsuit against members of the Pulitzer Prize board. The lawsuit concerns the board’s refusal to rescind Pulitzers awarded to The New York Times and The washington Post for their coverage of Russian interference in the 2016 election.
The newspapers received the award for national reporting in 2018, recognized for their in-depth coverage of Russian interference and its connections to the Trump campaign.
White House spokesman Harrison fields defended Musk’s service in the Trump management, highlighting his role in the DOGE initiative to cut government waste. Fields stated that Musk ”accomplished more for American taxpayers then many career politicians,” without addressing the drug use allegations.
“Is this The New York Times? is that the same publication that got a Pulitzer Prize for false reporting on … Russia-gate? I think the judge just ruled against The New York Times for their lies about the Russia-gate hoax, and that they might have to give back that prize. Let’s move on.”
