Elon Musk’s White House Role: Fueling Tesla Brand Destruction?
Updated May 25, 2025
Elon Musk’s association with the White House DOGE office has significantly damaged tesla’s brand, according to NYU marketing professor Scott Galloway.Galloway suggests this connection fueled “one of the greatest brand destructions” ever seen.
Speaking on the Pivot podcast, Galloway noted Tesla’s dramatic fall in the Axios Harris poll, plummeting from eighth place in 2021 to 95th in 2025. He attributes this decline to musk’s shift toward politics, alienating Tesla’s core customer base.
Musk’s support for Trump’s presidential campaign and his prominent role in DOGE, an agency focused on government efficiency, sparked a backlash, largely directed at Tesla. The company reported a 71% drop in earnings per share in late April, accompanied by widespread protests at dealerships.
“he is a brilliant guy,but he’s alienated his core demographic,” Galloway said. He added that Musk has aligned himself with people who are not interested in electric vehicles, noting that most Republicans would never consider buying an EV.
During Tesla’s recent earnings call, Musk announced plans to reduce his involvement with DOGE and concentrate on his core companies. He reiterated this commitment, stating he would be “super focused on 𝕏/xAI and Tesla (plus Starship launch next week).”
Musk also told the Qatar Economic Forum that he intends to decrease political spending in the future, adding, “If I see a reason to do political spending in the future, I will do it. I do not currently see a reason.”
What’s next
Musk’s renewed focus on Tesla and SpaceX could signal a shift away from political involvement, potentially mitigating further damage to the Tesla brand. The success of this strategy remains to be seen.
