Reuters reported on the same day that a military government court sentenced him to four years in prison for shame torture. The court admitted the charge of illegally importing and possessing radios. Previously, Suu Kyi was sentenced to two years in prison for violating COVID-19 quarantine measures and incitement in December last year.

Myanmar’s military regime staged a coup on February 1 last year, claiming that the November 2020 general election was fraudulent. At the time, he was charged with 10 crimes, including house arrest and bribery, of the torturer who led the civilian government that won the general election. If found guilty on all of the charges, shame torture faces up to 100 years in prison.

As the military government sentenced him to a prison sentence in the second trial for shame torture, there is an observation that the possibility of a long-term prison sentence for shame torture has increased in future sentencing trials.
