NAD+ Set to Revolutionize Anti-Aging and Wellness in 2025
Updated May 25, 2025
Forget expensive serums and fleeting treatments; the future of anti-aging may lie within. As the global wellness industry surges toward $9 trillion by 2028, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is gaining traction as a key to longevity and overall health. Leonard Guarente, a biology professor at MIT, describes NAD+ as a coenzyme essential for life, present in every cell.
While many focus on external signs of aging, such as wrinkles, the decline of NAD+ impacts cellular function. Guarente said the goal isn’t just about appearance but extending “healthspan”—the period of life free from age-related diseases.
NAD+ was first identified in 1906.Later research connected its deficiency to pellagra, a disease characterized by dermatitis, diarrhea, dementia, and death. Fortification of flour with vitamin B3, an NAD+ precursor, eradicated pellagra in the U.S.from the 1940s onward.
NAD+ functions by assisting enzymes like sirtuins, which are crucial for longevity. As NAD+ levels decrease with age, sirtuin activity slows, potentially accelerating aging.Boosting NAD+ aims to counteract this effect.
The goal of increasing NAD+ to youthful levels is to extend healthspan, the period of life during which you’re able to do the things you need and want to do, free of disease and age-related limitations.
Leonard Guarente, biology professor, MIT
The anti-aging market is projected to reach $80 billion by 2030, and NAD+ is increasingly popular in biohacking circles. A study by wellness brand Elysium showed a 40% increase in NAD+ levels through oral supplements. Celebrities and wellness enthusiasts are also exploring NAD+ through IV drips.
Research suggests that increasing NAD+ to youthful levels offers benefits ranging from healthy aging to consistent cellular energy production and DNA protection.
Guarente advises against administering NAD+ directly, as it doesn’t effectively enter cells. Instead, he recommends using NAD+ precursors like NR and NMN through oral supplements, citing research supporting their safety and efficacy. While IV drips of NAD+ precursors are available, Guarente considers them painful, costly, and unnecessary.
Topical application of NAD+ is ineffective because it cannot penetrate the skin. Niacinamide, an early NAD+ precursor found in many topical products, can be used as an alternative.
Guarente notes anecdotal reports of side effects from IV infusions, including nausea, vomiting, and headaches. He recommends Elysium’s Basis, an oral supplement that has been sold for nearly 10 years and raises NAD+ levels by 40 percent without side effects.
what’s next
As research continues, NAD+ and its precursors are expected to play an increasingly significant role in strategies for promoting healthy aging and extending healthspan.
