The FBI is investigating a ransom letter sent to multiple media outlets, with an initial deadline of 5 p.m. On Thursday, February 5, 2026, and a second deadline set for next Monday. According to FBI Special Agent in Charge Heith Janke, the family has not been contacted and has not received any “proof of life.”
Police have arrested Derrick Callella in California, accusing him of sending texts to the Guthrie family regarding the Bitcoin requested in the ransom note. Callella allegedly told officials he “was trying to see if the family would respond,” but authorities have stated these messages “have not been linked to the February 2, 2026, ransom demand.”
On Wednesday evening, Savannah Guthrie and her siblings released a video appealing for information and proof that their mother is still alive. They indicated their willingness to discuss a ransom, contingent on confirmation of Nancy Guthrie’s well-being.
