Two Killed in Wrong-Way Crash Near Nantes

Two men died in the early hours of Saturday morning in a head-on collision near Bouguenais, in the Loire-Atlantique region of France. The crash involved a vehicle traveling the wrong way on a dual carriageway, without headlights.

According to reports, the incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. As a Renault Clio, carrying two 42-year-old men, was traveling towards Nantes. As they approached a roundabout, they were struck by a Toyota Yaris traveling in the opposite direction, against the flow of traffic and with its lights off. The impact was described as violent.

Emergency services arriving at the scene found the occupants of the Clio had sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Yaris, a 44-year-old man, was seriously injured and transported to the University Hospital of Nantes (CHU de Nantes) for treatment.

Following medical attention, the driver of the Yaris was placed under guard at the hospital. Authorities are awaiting the results of blood alcohol and drug tests to determine if impairment was a factor in the crash.

Ouest-France reported that the driver responsible for the collision is known to law enforcement. His condition is not life-threatening.

Details regarding the identities of the two men who died in the Clio have not yet been released. The investigation is ongoing and authorities are working to determine the circumstances that led to the Yaris traveling the wrong way on the road.

Wrong-way crashes are particularly dangerous, with head-on collisions accounting for 18 percent of all deadly traffic accidents in the United States, according to data from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). These types of accidents are 12 times more likely to result in death than other kinds of crashes.

A recent incident in Louisville, Kentucky, also involved a wrong-way driver, resulting in two fatalities early Sunday morning on Gene Snyder Freeway. Police responded to a report of a collision at approximately 1:40 a.m. And found that a man had entered the highway traveling northbound in a southbound lane, colliding with another vehicle. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

Similarly, in Long Island, New York, a wrong-way SUV driver caused a fatal head-on crash in November 2024, killing himself and the driver of the other vehicle. And in Florida, video captured the aftermath of a wrong-way crash on the Turnpike that claimed the lives of two men.

According to experts, drunk driving is a significant contributing factor to wrong-way crashes, accounting for nearly 60 percent of all such incidents. Distracted driving, reckless driving, fatigued driving, and unlicensed drivers also play a role.
