NASCAR has appointed Richard Bowman as its first-ever director of artificial intelligence, marking a significant step in the sanctioning body’s efforts to integrate advanced technology into its operations. The announcement was confirmed through a LinkedIn posting by Bowman and subsequent verification from the organization on April 8, 2026.

Bowman joined NASCAR at the start of the 2026 calendar year, initially serving as an AI operations specialist. In that capacity, he led efforts regarding AI implementation, policy, governance, and strategy. His promotion to director is intended to formalize the organization’s approach to the technology.

In his new role, Bowman is tasked with guiding NASCAR’s AI strategy by identifying high-value opportunities and supporting responsible execution across the business. This includes collaborating with teams to apply AI in ways that enhance commercial innovation, digital products, industry collaboration, and general operations.

Excited to share that I’m now Director, AI at NASCAR. Even in my relatively short time here, it has been clear that What we have is an organization willing to engage seriously with both the opportunities and responsibilities that come with AI. I’m grateful for the chance to help lead that work.

Background and Professional Philosophy

Prior to his tenure at NASCAR, Bowman’s professional background was rooted in the IT sector, specifically working with school systems and educational technology. He has stated that this experience influenced his perspective on innovation, suggesting that technology only provides value when it is trusted and usable within the flow of actual work.

Bowman emphasized the necessity for clarity, governance, and thoughtful adoption as the organization navigates the potential of AI.

Integration Within Global Auto Racing

NASCAR’s move follows a broader trend across global auto racing, where entities are experimenting with AI to improve both off-track operations and on-track performance. The sanctioning body has already engaged in pilot projects with OpenAI.

NASCAR president Steve O’Donnell has previously noted that the technology is being studied for various business and competition-related applications. Other racing series and teams have also established AI partnerships, including:

  • OpenAI has a team deal with Chip Ganassi Racing in IndyCar.
  • The Atlassian Williams F1 Team has a deal with Anthropic and its Claude platform.
  • Scuderia Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton has an endorsement deal with Perplexity.
  • The Cadillac F1 Team, co-owned by TWG, has deployed the TWG AI platform as a key sponsor.

Within NASCAR specifically, some teams are already integrating AI tools. Phil Surgen, the Director of Technology for Trackhouse Racing, discussed these integrations ahead of the 2026 season. Hendrick Motorsports has utilized robots to assist in the production of race cars.

Upcoming AI Initiatives

As part of the organization’s push into the technology, Bowman is participating in a webinar hosted by OpenAI on April 8, 2026. He is joined by Derek Thomas, NASCAR’s Managing Director of Analytics, to discuss the circuit’s use of AI.

The discussion, titled The AI Pit Crew: NASCAR’s Legacy of Innovation Meets the Age of AI, focuses on how the organization brings AI into day-to-day work, specifically regarding workforce enablement, operations, and analytics.

OpenAI announced a virtual session scheduled for April 9, 2026, which will focus on AI adoption within motorsports and feature NASCAR.
