Nathan Chen retires from Figure Skating to Pursue Medical Career

Three-time Olympic medalist and World champion Nathan Chen has announced his retirement from competitive figure skating, setting his sights on a future in medicine.The decision comes as a surprise to many, but Chen expresses a deep sense of fulfillment with his skating career and a growing desire to directly help others.
from ‘Quad King’ to Future Doctor
Chen, widely known as the ‘Quad king’ for his mastery of quadruple jumps, revealed his plans to the LA Times. He’s now preparing to apply to medical school, marking a significant shift in his professional life.
“And frankly, at this point in time in my life, I’ve already accomplished enough in skating that I’m quite satisfied with my career,” Chen stated.
This isn’t a sudden whim. Chen has been contemplating this transition for some time, recognizing a desire for a career path were he can have a more direct impact on people’s lives.While his athletic achievements brought him immense satisfaction, he felt a calling for something more.
A Desire to Heal and Help
chen’s inspiration stems from a profound desire to help others. He’s currently considering specializing in cardiology or oncology, two fields where he believes he can make a considerable difference.
“The basis of being a doctor, I think, is to help people,” Chen explained. He already actively engages in philanthropic work through his nonprofit association,youth Taking strides (YTS),but seeks a more direct and consistent avenue for contributing to the well-being of others.”I think that’s something that I didn’t necessarily feel as an athlete, that I felt was a little bit lacking, and I get a bit of that doing YTS,” he added.
Passing the Crown and Supporting the Next Generation
Chen’s departure leaves a void in the world of figure skating, but he’s content with passing on his legacy and supporting Team USA’s future success. He’s eager to watch the next generation of skaters compete and pursue their own Olympic dreams.
Having dominated the sport with his innovative and technically challenging programs, Chen leaves behind a remarkable record. His three World Championships (2017, 2018, 2019) and Olympic bronze medal at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing cemented his place as one of the greatest figure skaters of all time.
He’s now ready to trade his skates for a stethoscope, embarking on a new journey fueled by a passion for healing and a commitment to making a positive impact on the world.
