World Franchise Day Spotlights Local Franchise Owners
Franchise leaders worldwide are observing the inaugural World Franchise Day, a global effort to boost awareness of franchising’s economic impact and honor the local owners driving these businesses.
Sherry McNeil, president and CEO of the Canadian Franchise Association, conceived the idea.Collaborating with Kirk Allen,co-founder of Reshift Media, and the World Franchise Council,McNeil established the second Wednesday in June as World Franchise Day to recognize franchisees as small business owners.
“People often think franchising is just big business,” McNeil said. “but franchisees are your neighbors. They hire locally, pay local taxes and support their communities.”
Franchising spans over 660 business categories, including mobile dog grooming, home services, and fitness studios. Franchise service providers are also expanding, offering services like digital marketing and lead generation.
McNeil and Allen emphasize due diligence for potential franchisees, including understanding startup costs and aligning with ethical brands. McNeil suggests looking for logos from organizations like the CFA and International Franchise Association, which vet members.
Allen hopes World Franchise Day will be a catalyst for recognition. “Every franchise brand should do something — put a poster in the window, share a franchisee’s story, give away a coffee,” Allen said.
What’s next
Organizers plan to expand World Franchise Day initiatives in coming years, encouraging greater participation from franchise brands and franchisees globally to further highlight their economic and community contributions.
