China to Host APEC in 2026

On November 16, 2024, during the APEC Annual Meeting in Peru, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced that China will host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in 2026. The announcement follows discussions among APEC member economies, including Taiwan, which voiced concerns about China’s influence and its “22 views on independence.”

Xu Xijian, Deputy Secretary-General of China’s National Security Council, stated that all APEC decisions are made by consensus. He noted that after thorough talks, China assured all members that they would participate with equal status at the meetings.

China’s pledge includes adherence to APEC’s rules and ensuring the safety of all participants. Despite concerns regarding China’s trustworthiness, the consensus among APEC economies was reached, confirming China’s role as host for 2026.

Additionally, APEC hosting was adjusted due to previous scheduling plans, with South Korea hosting in 2025 and Vietnam in 2027. The meeting in Peru highlighted the importance of open dialogue among APEC economies amid existing tensions.

China’s promises aim to address the worries of member nations and reinforce their commitment to APEC’s principles.
