Dear Starstruck:
It is unlikely that your friend is communicating with real celebrities on Telegram. This app, while popular, can be a platform for scams, especially romance scams. In 2023, there were over 64,000 reported romance scams, leading to significant financial losses.
To help your friend:
-
Educate: Show her information from the Federal Trade Commission or the FBI’s resources on scams. This can help her understand her situation better.
-
Express Concern: Share your worries about her safety and finances. Make it clear that she is not alone and should not feel ashamed.
-
Encourage Caution: If she believes she is talking to real celebrities, suggest she requires a video chat or a personalized video message before believing any claims.
- Set Boundaries: Make sure any financial transactions are legitimate, like buying concert tickets or albums, rather than sending money directly to individuals online.
Engaging her in these discussions may help her see the reality of her situation while still showing her support.
