Pécresse Pledges “Tariff shield” Amidst Île-de-France Transport Price Increases
Valérie Pécresse, president of the Île-de-france region, has promised a “tariff shield” to protect public transport users from important price hikes. Speaking during the commissioning of the first MF19 metro train on line 10, Pécresse stated there would be “no massive increase in prices.”
Modernization drives Price Adjustments
Pécresse defended her governanceS costly modernization efforts, emphasizing a choice to invest in infrastructure over potentially offering free Navigo passes. “Maybe someone else in my place would have chosen to give free Navigo passes, but there would have been no new trains,” she said, adding she is prepared to negotiate with the national government for additional funding.
At the end of 2023, a funding model was established where public transport is financed by users, employers (through an increase in the mobility payment tax), and local authorities. Cities, departments, and the regional government have committed to increasing their contributions by the rate of inflation plus 2% through 2028, then by the rate of inflation alone through 2031.
“Everyone contributes but users are protected through this moderate increase,” Pécresse explained, stating her willingness to make “unpopular” political decisions to improve service quality.
Major Projects Underway
Pécresse highlighted upcoming projects, including the Grand Paris Express, which aims to double the Île-de-France metro network to over 200 km of new lines by 2031. Other projects include extending the RER E to Mantes-la-Jolie and the T13 tram line.
The region also plans to continue renewing its fleet of buses, coaches, metros, trains, and RER cars. “Prices are increasing because there are all these modernizations,” Pécresse stated, without detailing specific ticket price adjustments.
Opposition groups fear that this “moderate” increase in the navigo pass price could lead to sharper increases in Paris Visite tickets (for travel to/from airports) and social pricing options. details are expected in december.
