NBA Playoffs: Do Top Seeds Rule the Road to the NBA Finals?
Updated June 3, 2025
The 2025 NBA Playoffs have been anything but predictable. Underdog stories abound, with teams overcoming double-digit deficits and thriving on the road. The Oklahoma City Thunder, boasting one of the youngest rosters in recent history, and the Indiana Pacers have defied expectations to reach the NBA Finals.
Despite the upsets, one trend remains consistent: the importance of regular-season success. Historically, top seeds dominate the NBA championship landscape. Of the 78 NBA champions prior to this year, 77 were top-four seeds. This year’s finalists, Oklahoma City (No. 1 seed in the West) and Indiana (No. 4 seed in the East), fit the bill.
Though, a deeper dive reveals an even stronger correlation. the last 29 NBA champions were all top-three seeds. Should Indiana win the NBA title, they would be only the second fourth-seeded team to do so, the first since 1981. the NBA regular season, often criticized for its length, proves to be a reliable indicator of postseason endurance.
An Eastern Conference scout noted the regular season’s value. “If you look at over 82 games, it’s a pretty good sample size to tell you who are the best teams,” the scout said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The scout acknowledged the possibility of a lower seed winning, but emphasized the rarity.
The 1995 Houston Rockets remain the exception, winning the title as a sixth seed. While teams like the 1999 New York Knicks and the 2023 Miami Heat reached the finals as eighth seeds, they ultimately fell short. Similarly, the 1981 Houston team, the 2020 Miami Heat, and the 2024 Dallas mavericks each made the NBA Finals as fifth seeds. A strong regular season and high NBA Playoffs seeding matters.
