On April 20, 2026, NBC News’ TODAY show co-host Jenna Bush Hager conducted exclusive one-on-one interviews with four former U.S. Presidents — Joe Biden, Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton — as part of a special event hosted by the History Channel in partnership with Comcast, NBCUniversal’s parent company. The interviews were conducted ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary in July 2026 and focused on the presidents’ reflections about American democracy, their motivations for seeking office, and messages for the American public.
The event, titled “History Talks,” took place over the weekend in Philadelphia and brought together the living former presidents for private conversations with Bush Hager, who is the daughter of former President George W. Bush. Excerpts from the interviews were aired on TODAY on Monday, April 20, 2026, with the full interviews scheduled to appear exclusively on the show the following day.
During her conversation with former President Bill Clinton, who is 79 years old, he emphasized the resilience of American democracy and urged citizens not to lose faith in the nation’s future. “So I think my message is, don’t give up on America,” Clinton said. “We’re the longest-lasting, freely elected government in history. And a lot of people didn’t think we’d make it this long. I think it would be a good thing if we made it longer. So everybody should be thinking about that this year.”
Former President Joe Biden, aged 83 at the time of the interview, highlighted the uniqueness of the American system of government, particularly its reliance on constitutional rules to govern democratic processes. “We are the most unique country in the world in the sense that we really do think democracy is dictated by the rules of the Constitution,” Biden stated during his session with Bush Hager.
