NC Dinos Nearing Deal with MLB Pitcher Daniel Castano

Dinos Look to Sign Daniel Castano as New Foreign Pitcher

By Bae Joong-hyeon

The NC Dinos are eagerly anticipating the addition of left-handed pitcher Daniel Castano to their roster as a new foreign recruit. The final stages of the contracting process are currently underway following the team’s classification of Castano as a potential addition to their lineup. If all goes smoothly, final negotiations are expected to be completed after a comprehensive medical examination. Similar to the procedure undergone by Eric Peddy of the Chicago White Sox, Castano’s physical condition is being meticulously scrutinized.

Castano, who boasts a four-year Major League (MLB) career, has recorded 2 wins and 7 losses with an average ERA of 4.47 in 24 games, 17 of which were as a starter. While his performance in the MLB has been less than stellar, his extensive experience in the minor leagues has undoubtedly honed his skills. With 42 wins and 28 losses across 120 games (88 starts) in his seven-year career, Castano’s Triple A record includes 15 wins, 4 losses, and an ERA of 4.24, along with a WHIP of 1.207 and 2.7 walks per 9 innings.

According to Fangraph.com, Castano is known for his diverse pitching repertoire, featuring a mix of fastballs (including four-seam fastballs), sliders, breaking fastballs, and change-ups. While his average fastball speed this year hovers around 89.9 miles per hour, he has been recorded reaching a top speed of 152 km/h, making him an intriguing prospect for the KBO League. In addition to his pitching prowess, Castano’s physical build, standing at 1m90cm and weighing 104kg, sets him apart from his counterparts.

Despite a setback last July when Castano sustained a head injury from a line drive during a game against the Cincinnati Reds, foreign scouts have praised his skill set, identifying his injuries as a potential obstacle. Following the departure of Ace Peddie, the Dinos are aiming to finalize their trio of foreign players with the addition of Castano to their roster.

NC Dinos are counting down the days to recruit left-hander Daniel Castano (29) as a new foreign pitcher.

As a result of this newspaper’s coverage, NC has classified Castano as a potential recruit and is going through the contracting process. Final negotiations are expected to be completed if no major problems are found in the medical test. Like Eric Peddy (currently from the Chicago White Sox), who came to Korea after completing a contract agreement and underwent a medical test in Seoul, Castano’s physical condition is also carefully checked.

Castano’s career (4 years) Major League (MLB) record is 2 wins, 7 losses, and an average ERA of 4.47 in 24 games (17 as a starter). This season, he appeared in two games for the Miami Marlins. His MLB performance is not very outstanding, but he has a lot of experience in the minor leagues. In his career (7 years), 120 games (88 starts), he has 42 wins, 28 losses, and an average ERA of 3.91. His Triple A career record is 15 wins, 4 losses, an ERA of 4.24, a WHIP of 1.207, and 2.7 walks per 9 innings.

According to Fangraph.com, an MLB records website, Castano is the type of player who mixes fastballs (four-seam fastballs) with sliders, breaking fastballs, and change-ups. The average speed of a fastball this year is 89.9 miles (144.7 km/h). Another record site, Baseball Servant, measured it at 91.4 miles (147.1 km/h). Although he is not the fast speed type, he is known to have reached a top speed of 152 km/h according to Trackman data, so it will be interesting to see what he will show in the KBO League. Compared to left-handed pitcher Tanner Turley (height 1m84cm, weight 92kg), who played in a CC uniform this season, Castano (height 1m90cm, weight 104kg) has a more robust body.

Castano collapsed after being hit by a batted ball during an away game against the Cincinnati Reds last July. He was hit in the head by Donovan Solano’s 104 mph (167.4 km/h) line drive. Castano, who was placed on the injured list (IL) after the game, finished the season without returning to the big leagues. A foreign scout from Club A said, “Castano’s skills are good. His fastball is faster (than what is shown in the data),” and “Injuries are the key.”

Meanwhile, after Ace Peddie signed with the White Sox and left the team, NC plans to replace the three foreign players.
