Ncuti Gatwa, the beloved 32-year-old Rwandan Scottish actor best known for his breakout role as Eric Effiong in Netflix’s Sex Education, has announced his departure from the iconic role of the Doctor in Doctor Who. Gatwa, who helmed the TARDIS for two series, made his debut in a special 60th-anniversary episode alongside David Tennant’s 14th Doctor.
A Strenuous, Yet Rewarding Journey
In a candid interview on BBC One’s Sunday wiht Laura Kuenssberg, Gatwa explained his decision to step down, attributing it to the demanding nature of the role. “I’m getting old, and my body was tired,” he shared with a characteristic warmth. “And I’ve now just started doing some ballet, so I’m making really great decisions.”
He elaborated on the immense physical, emotional, and mental toll the job takes, describing it as “the most amazing job in the world, a job that any actor would dream of and – as it’s so good – it’s strenuous.” Gatwa acknowledged that after a meaningful commitment, “it was time.”
When pressed about the possibility of returning to the Whoniverse, Gatwa offered a hopeful, “Never say never,” leaving the door open for future adventures.
A Bi-Generational doctor
Gatwa took over the reins as the Fifteenth Doctor in 2023, following a unique “bi-generation” event where David Tennant’s 14th doctor seemingly split into two, with Gatwa’s version continuing the journey. This innovative storytelling allowed for a seamless transition and a fresh take on the Time Lord.
His final episode saw a surprising regeneration, with former doctor Who companion Billie Piper appearing to take over the mantle, a moment that sparked considerable fan discussion and speculation.
Eurovision withdrawal and Theatrical Pursuits
The Barbie star’s departure from Doctor Who comes after he withdrew from his expected role as the UK’s spokesperson at the Eurovision Song Contest in may. While speculation linked his decision to controversy surrounding Israel’s participation, Gatwa clarified his reasons.
“It all panned out vrey interestingly,” he stated. “I pulled out of it a long time before it was announced. And it was announced when it was announced. I don’t know why, but I was just very busy.” He cited a packed schedule with press commitments for his latest film, The Roses, and his work on Doctor Who. When asked directly about the Eurovision speculation, Gatwa reiterated, “I was just very busy.”
Gatwa is now set to captivate audiences on the West End stage. He will star as the renowned playwright Christopher marlowe in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Born with Teeth. The play, which reimagines the relationship between Marlowe and William Shakespeare, also features his Sex Education co-star Edward Bluemel as Shakespeare. The production is set to premiere at London’s Wyndham’s Theater in August.
“It’s a really great story between these two huge literary icons, and it’s very exciting to imagine what could have happened in a room together,” Gatwa enthused about his new theatrical venture.
