The highly anticipated transfer of Mallorca striker Lee Kang-in (22) to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) seems to have hit a snag. While personal agreements, including salary, have been finalized, Mallorca is demanding a higher transfer fee, leading to the delay in the transfer announcement.

Mateo Moreto, a reliable source on Lee Kang-in’s transfer news, addressed the recent negative public opinion regarding the transfer to PSG on his social network service (SNS). Moreto stated, “There is no problem with Lee Kang-in’s transfer to PSG.” This statement is seen as a rebuttal to the criticism faced by Lee regarding the transfer. Earlier, on the 13th, Moreto had mentioned that negotiations between PSG and Mallorca were underway and the transfer would be completed soon.

The prolonged transfer process has piqued the curiosity of fans, especially considering that European transfer market expert Fabricio Romano had hinted at an imminent announcement. Romano had tweeted, “Here we go soon,” indicating that the transfer announcement was imminent and added, “Lee Kang-in and PSG have completed a verbal agreement on a long-term contract. A medical test has also been conducted. We are in the final stages of negotiations.” However, no official transfer announcement has been made yet.

The delay in the transfer announcement is believed to stem from a disagreement over the transfer fee between Mallorca and PSG. French media outlet ‘Le Parisien’ reported that PSG is unwilling to pay more than 20 million euros (approximately 28.5 billion won), while Mallorca is seeking 22 million euros (approximately 31.4 billion won). Spanish publication ‘Marca’ also noted that the talks between the two clubs have hit an impasse, resulting in the delay of Lee Kang-in’s move to PSG. When Mallorca signed Lee Kang-in from Valencia in 2021, they acquired him as a free agent, without having to pay a transfer fee. However, given his remarkable performance this season, Mallorca is keen on maximizing their earnings from his transfer.

Lee Kang-in has had a remarkable season, showcasing tremendous growth since his professional debut. He played a crucial role in Korea’s advancement to the round of 16 in the 2022 World Cup and emerged as a key player in Mallorca’s squad in the latter half of the season. With 6 goals and 6 assists in 36 league appearances, his contributions extended beyond mere statistics. His quick movements, creative passes, and ability to influence the game from various positions were highly praised. Additionally, his unique ability to handle pressure and exceptional dribbling skills have further elevated his reputation as a creative force in Mallorca’s attack.

Lee Kang-in’s importance is not limited to his club team alone. He has become a prominent figure in the Korean national football team under coach Klinsman. Despite the team’s losses to Peru and El Salvador in recent friendlies, Lee Kang-in stood out with his exceptional performances. Filling in for the injured Son Heung-min, he displayed MVP-level skills in both games. Coach Klinsman acknowledged Lee Kang-in’s rising fame in South America, stating, “Lee Kang-in has become a renowned player in South America. His performances in La Liga have caught the attention of many. The opponents were well aware of his abilities and focused their defense on him, indicating his growing prestige.” Nevertheless, Klinsman emphasized the need for continuous improvement, acknowledging that Lee Kang-in still has room to grow.

Although personal agreements such as salary have been finalised, this is because Mallorca want a higher transfer fee. On the 24th (Korea time), Mateo Moreto of Spain’s Lelevo, who regularly handles news related to Kang-in Lee’s transfer, said on his social network service (SNS), “There is no problem with Kang-in’s transfer in Lee to PSG.” The recent negative public opinion about Lee Kang-in’s transfer to PSG is interpreted as a rebuttal to Lee. Previously, on the 13th, Moretto also said, “PSG is negotiating with Mallorca. Sooner or later, the transfer of Lee Kang-in will be completed.”

It seems that negotiations have reached the last minute, but the transfer announcement has not been heard, raising the curiosity of the fans. On the 14th, 10 days ago, European transfer market expert Fabricio Romano wrote “Here we go soon,” which means the transfer announcement will happen soon, and said, “Lee Kang-in and PSG have completed a verbal agreement on a long-term contract. A medical test was also carried out. We are in the final stages of negotiations.” However, no official transfer announcement has been made.

According to the French media ‘Le Parisien’, PSG are in a position where they cannot pay more than 20 million euros (about 28.5 billion won), but Mallorca want to receive 22 million euros (about 31.4 billion won). Spain’s ‘Marca’ also said, “It seems that the talks between the two sides have somehow been resolved. However, Lee Kang-in’s joining PSG is being delayed while the disagreement cannot be narrowed.” When Mallorca brought Lee Kang-in from Valencia in 2021, they signed him as a free agent (FA) and did not spend the transfer fee. However, with Lee Kang-in growing into the best player in La Liga this season, he is in a position to collect as much transfer fee as possible.

Lee Kang-in’s performance this season was truly brilliant. It was the year of greatest growth since his professional debut. In particular, after making a major contribution to Korea’s progress to the round of 16 in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he was reborn as a full ace in the second half of his comeback. He has scored 6 goals and 6 assists in 36 appearances in the league this season. Lee Kang-in’s contribution to the team was more than what was shown in the number of attack points. He led Mallorca’s attack with quick moves and creative passes, going back and forth from the flanks and the center in every game. His unique ability off pressure and fine dribbling also stood out. Lee Kang-in’s creative play was also evaluated as adding creativity to Mallorca’s attack.

The Korean national team failed to win, losing to Peru and El Salvador in two consecutive A game friendlies in June. However, the only consolation was Lee Kang-in’s performance. Lee Kang-in, who led the Korean offense in place of Son Heung-min, who was recovering from sports hernia surgery, played an MVP-level performance in both games. After the match against Peru, coach Klinsman said, “Lee Kang-in has become a very famous player in South America. This is because he watches a lot of La Liga matches in South America. The opponent knew Lee Kang-in is very good. “Defense cooperation went in,” explained Lee Kang-in higher prestige. However, he also asked for improvements, saying, “Playing Lee Kang-in is fun and makes us look on to it, but it’s also a time to grow.
