Neighbors Threaten to Halt Tinderbox Festival Over Alleged Permit Issues in Odense

A neighborhood dispute threatens the Tinderbox festival in Odense, Denmark. Michael Nielsen, a member of the local association Dyrskuepladsens Naboer, claims the festival lacks necessary permits. He is determined to stop one of Denmark’s largest music festivals, which has featured stars like The Killers and Miley Cyrus since its inception in 2015.

Nielsen’s group recently won a case about illegal concerts in the area and is now targeting the Tinderbox festival in Tusenårsskogen. Nielsen argues that the Odense municipality does not have the correct authorizations to hold the festival, which he believes the mayor, Peter Rahbæk Juel, has admitted in local media.

Previously, the group spent 600,000 kroner on complaints and legal actions against the municipality. Nielsen is prepared to invest the same amount again to shut down Tinderbox.

The mayor has strongly criticized this campaign, labeling it an “icy vendetta” led by a small group of wealthy individuals supported by a prominent lawyer from Copenhagen. He warns that shutting down the festival, which attracts around 50,000 attendees each year, would harm Odense’s economy, cultural scene, and identity.

Juel highlighted that the city is working diligently to ensure that events like Tinderbox can continue to operate legally in the future. When asked about the festival’s previous legality, he refused to give a clear answer. Efforts to contact Tinderbox for a response were unsuccessful.
