Nelu Iordache Released: Prescribed Crime in Nădlac-Arad Case

In‌ the fall of 2021, Iordache was ⁤sentenced by the Bucharest Court of Appeal to 11 years and 9 months in⁣ prison for the misappropriation of european⁢ funds on ‍the first⁢ section of ​the Nădlac-Arad highway. The ​damage amounted ‌to 1.2 billion lei.

Judges have‍ now ruled that⁤ two of ‍the offenses for which ⁤Nelu Iordache had been convicted, namely misappropriation of European ‌funds and embezzlement, have ​been statute-barred. Consequently, thes ⁢convictions ⁢have been annulled and the‌ sentences no longer need ‍to​ be served.

Subsequently, the Bucharest ⁤Court of ⁤appeal‌ combined the remaining sentences for forgery, fraud, and another⁣ conviction, ​and established a new sentence⁤ of 5 years⁤ and​ 10 months in prison, half of what the ‍businessman had‍ initially received. As this second sentence ⁣has already been served,Nelu‌ Iordache‍ has​ been ⁢released from prison.
