Show of Support After Gen-C Protests
The Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN-UML) held a large rally in Bhaktapur, near Kathmandu, signaling its continued influence following its removal from power after the Gen-C protests. Police estimated attendance at 70,000, though organizers claimed 300,000 participants. This marked the party’s first notable public demonstration since losing power.
The rally was the largest by a political party in Nepal since the youth-led Gen-C protests, wich led to the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli three months prior. The protests, stemming from anti-corruption concerns, resulted in approximately 77 deaths and over 2,000 injuries, with protesters targeting government buildings including the Prime Minister’s office, the Supreme Court, and Parliament.
Upcoming Elections and Leadership Contest
The rally coincided with the proclamation by the interim government, led by former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, of upcoming general elections scheduled for March 5th. CPN-UML General Secretary shankar Pokhrel stated the party is not opposed to the Gen-C movement and that the rally’s turnout demonstrates continued public acceptance despite their recent political setback.
On Monday, the party will elect a new president, with Ishwar Pokharel and KP sharma Oli competing for the position. Approximately 2,000 party members will participate in the election, with the winner leading the party into the next general election.
