Nestlé CEO Sacked: Undisclosed Relationship Scandal
Nestlé CEO Laurent Freixe Ousted Following Relationship Disclosure
Geneva, Switzerland – Nestlé has abruptly dismissed its Chief Executive Officer, Laurent Freixe, following an internal investigation into an “undisclosed romantic relationship” with a subordinate. The move, announced today, underscores the increasing scrutiny of executive conduct and the enforcement of corporate ethics policies. Philipp Navratil has been named as FreixeS replacement, effective promptly.
The investigation was led by Nestlé Chairman Paul Bulcke and lead independent director Pablo Isla, with support from external legal counsel. The company stated the relationship breached its code of business conduct, without providing further details. Freixe’s departure marks the second time Nestlé has replaced its CEO in less than a year, following the ousting of Mark Schneider in September 2023.
“This was a necessary decision,” Bulcke stated. “Nestlé’s values and governance are strong foundations of our company. I thank Laurent for his years of service.”
Navratil’s Background and Leadership Style
Philipp Navratil brings a wealth of experience within Nestlé, having joined the company in 2001. His career trajectory demonstrates a consistent record of success across diverse roles and geographies.
| Year | Role | Location |
|---|---|---|
| 2001 | Internal Auditor | Nestlé |
| 2009 | Country Manager | Nestlé Honduras |
| 2013 | Leadership | Coffee & Beverage Business, Mexico |
| 2020 | Strategic Business Division | Nestlé Coffee |
| July 2024 | Leadership | Nespresso |
| January 2024 | Executive Board Member | nestlé |
Bulcke described Navratil as a leader “recognised for his notable track record of achieving results in challenging environments.” He further emphasized Navratil’s “dynamic presence” and “collaborative, inclusive management style,” expressing confidence in his ability to maintain Nestlé’s growth trajectory and efficiency efforts. The board has explicitly stated there will be no change in overall strategy.
A Pattern of Executive Dismissals Over Relationships
Freixe’s dismissal echoes a similar situation at BP in September 2023, where CEO Bernard Looney resigned after failing to disclose past relationships with colleagues. Looney was subsequently formally dismissed for serious misconduct after an investigation revealed he had knowingly misled the board. These cases highlight a growing trend of companies taking decisive action against executives who violate ethical guidelines regarding workplace relationships.
Nestlé, a global food and beverage giant, owns a portfolio of well-known brands including KitKat, Häagen-Dazs, and Nespresso. The company’s performance and reputation are heavily reliant on maintaining consumer trust and adhering to high ethical standards.
