Netflix is adding three new movies to its streaming lineup this weekend, positioning them as alternatives to Antoine Fuqua’s controversial Michael Jackson biopic Michael, which is currently in theaters.
The streamer has added Bohemian Rhapsody, Denial, and Everest to its catalog, offering subscribers a range of options from music biopics to courtroom dramas and survival thrillers.
‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ (2018)
Bohemian Rhapsody features Rami Malek in an Oscar-winning performance as Freddie Mercury, tracing the Queen frontman’s journey from his humble origins as an airport employee in 1970 to global stardom in the late 1970s and 1980s.
The film faithfully reproduces Queen’s memorable performances, including their appearance on Top of the Pops playing “Killer Queen” and their iconic Live Aid set at Wembley Stadium in 1985. Malek’s portrayal, aided by false teeth and wigs, captures Mercury’s essence, though it remains a very good impersonation rather than a transformative embodiment.
The movie, which grossed nearly a billion dollars worldwide, appeals to baby boomers seeking nostalgia and fans of stadium rock who enjoy air guitar performances.
Bohemian Rhapsody is currently streaming on Netflix.
‘Denial’ (2016)
Denial stars Rachel Weisz as Deborah Lipstadt, a respected American scholar specializing in Holocaust studies whose professional reputation is challenged when she is sued for defamation by British writer David Irving, portrayed by Timothy Spall.
Lipstadt claims Irving is a Holocaust denier, while he asserts he views the Holocaust from a German perspective. The film depicts her legal battle in British courts, where she must meet a high burden of proof to succeed, ultimately defending not just her reputation but the historical truth of the Holocaust.
The courtroom drama is described as sadly relevant in today’s era of fake news and rising antisemitism, with Weisz delivering one of her best performances as a scholar aware of the gravity of her case. Tom Wilkinson co-stars as her lawyer, advocating a cold and logical approach to winning the case.
Denial is available to stream on Netflix.
‘Everest’ (2015)
Everest dramatizes the true story of two rival expedition teams, Adventure Consultants and Mountain Madness, attempting to scale Mount Everest despite terrible weather conditions. While reaching the summit proves manageable, the descent becomes treacherous when a blizzard strands several climbers.
With supplies dwindling and air thinning, the remaining climbers face a moral dilemma: risk their lives to help stranded teammates or abandon them to certain doom. The film is based on actual events and conveys such visceral detail that viewers may experience vertigo or phantom frostbite.
The star-studded cast includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Keira Knightley, and Josh Brolin, though the mountain itself remains the most memorable aspect of the film—portrayed as beautiful, imposing, and not to be underestimated.
Everest is streaming on Netflix.
These three additions give Netflix subscribers compelling viewing options this weekend, counterprogramming against the theatrical release of Michael with established titles spanning different genres and true stories.
