Netflix Raises Prices and Phases Out Basic Ad-Free Plan in Some Countries

Netflix aggressively cracked down on non-resident shared accounts last year, and this year it has raised hidden prices again, announcing that it will be phasing out the “basic ad-free plan” in some countries that provide advertising plans. Canada and the United Kingdom will be the first to implement them in the second quarter of this year.

After the policy is implemented, users in Canada, the United Kingdom and elsewhere will need to pay a higher monthly subscription fee if they don’t want to be interrupted by ads. Netflix said that the number of members in countries that offer advertising plans has increased by 70% compared to the same period last year. Therefore, Netflix has directly canceled basic plans in some places. On the one hand, it can increase advertising revenue, and on the other hand, it can also allow users who do not want to watch ads. By upgrading to more expensive plans, Netflix is expected to introduce this policy in more countries.

Netflix offers slightly different subscription plans around the world, but there are 4 in total, including basic, standard and premium plans with and without ads.
