Netflix has released the official trailer for the upcoming thriller film Sacrifice, set for release on Oct. 16, 2026. Directed and co-written by Romain Gavras, the movie stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Evans in a high-stakes, chaotic story blending action, mystery, and suspense.
Plot and Premise of Netflix Thriller Sacrifice
According to reporting from Netflix, the film follows Joan, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, and her siblings. Driven by a mysterious volcanic prophecy following the fiery death of their mother, the group believes it is their duty to cleanse the Earth. To achieve this, their radical faction hijacks a glamorous charity gala hosted in an austere Greek mine. The cult takes three high-profile individuals hostage to serve as sacrifices for a ritual meant to prevent an extinction-level event. The captives include movie star Mike Tyler, played by Chris Evans; cold billionaire Ben Bracken, played by Vincent Cassel; and an unlucky performer named Katie, played by Ambika Mod, according to initial promotional details.

Star-Studded Cast and Production Details
The feature boasts an ensemble cast. Alongside Taylor-Joy, Evans, and Cassel, the movie features Salma Hayek-Pinault as Gloria Bracken, John Malkovich as Gunnar, and Sam Richardson as Oliver. Musicians Charli XCX and Yung Lean also appear in the film, with Charli XCX credited as Mother Nature and Jonatan “Yung Lean” Leandoer as Arthur, as detailed by Netflix. Director Romain Gavras drew inspiration from the myths told to him in his youth by his father, Greek film director Costa-Gavras. Gavras co-wrote the screenplay alongside Will Arbery. “In myths, everything is a little bit heightened,” Gavras told Netflix, noting that the violence, humor, and stakes are all exacerbated. “The film is kind of a roller coaster. You need to enter the film like you’re going to enter a ride and let yourself go.”

Themes of Wealth, Faith, and Survival
The narrative explores the friction between superficial wealth and absolute conviction. Chris Evans described his character as part of a glitzy, shallow group operating on a hypocritical platform, contrasting them with Joan’s followers, who are entirely devoted to their cause. “It almost seems like an ‘eat the rich’ story in the beginning, but I think it evolves into the death of ego — the death of that want and desire that comes from a superficial place,” Evans said in comments provided by Netflix. Anya Taylor-Joy characterized her role as a jolt to modern apathy. “It’s this concept that you can sweep things under the rug, and I think Joan and her tribe are cold water in the face to that,” she stated. Audiences can stream Sacrifice globally on Netflix beginning Oct. 16, 2026.
