Netflix is shifting its live sports strategy to prioritize major tentpole events, with the National Football League (NFL) emerging as a central focus in the post-Reed Hastings era.

The streaming giant, which once avoided live sports due to concerns over cost and regional limitations, has undergone a significant strategic shift. Netflix co-founder and former chief executive Reed Hastings’ decision to step down as chairman marked the end of an era for a company that had long ignored live sport in favor of on-demand content with longer shelf life.

Under new leadership, Netflix has begun investing in premium sports rights on both global and local levels. The company’s ambitions now include securing more NFL games, with reports indicating interest in expanding its current package from two to four games, including a potential Thanksgiving Eve matchup and an international contest.

This pivot aligns with broader industry trends, as streaming for the first time surpassed linear TV in usage in May 2025, according to Nielsen data. By September 2025, streaming accounted for 45.2% of viewing compared to 44.6% on linear platforms, marking a pivotal moment in media consumption that Netflix is seeking to capitalize on through live sports.

Netflix’s live sports strategy has already included high-profile events such as Christmas Day NFL games, blockbuster boxing matches, and a $5 billion deal with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). These investments reflect a deliberate effort to drive subscriptions and engagement through marquee sporting occasions rather than pursuing full league broadcasting rights.

The company has also shown willingness to adapt its traditionally global approach by acquiring rights in local markets. Earlier in 2026, Netflix secured the Mexican rights to the Concacaf Gold Cup and Nations League Finals for the next four years, signaling a more flexible strategy tailored to regional opportunities.

Financially, Netflix remains in a strong position to pursue these ambitions. The company reported $11.5 billion in revenue for the third quarter of 2025, a 17% year-over-year increase, and holds approximately 85% of total profits in the streaming industry according to research from Arctos. Its $483 billion market capitalization exceeds the combined value of Disney, Comcast, Warner Bros. Discovery, Fox, Paramount Skydance, and Roku.

While Netflix continues to emphasize its focus on large, tentpole events — as reiterated by co-CEO Ted Sarandos in recent investor communications — its growing involvement in live sports marks a fundamental shift from its earlier stance. The platform is no longer treating sports as a peripheral experiment but as a core component of its content strategy in an increasingly competitive streaming landscape.
