California generated more than 50% of its electricity from solar power during May 2026, according to reports from World & Nation. This represents a world record for a single month, driven by a combination of new battery storage capacity and lower overall electricity demand during the period.

The increase in solar’s share of the state’s energy mix is attributed to the deployment of large-scale power systems and new battery storage technologies. These systems allow the grid to capture excess solar energy produced during daylight hours and deploy it when production drops, reducing the reliance on other fuel sources.
