A Turkish research team has identified a previously unknown, parathyroid hormone-secreting cell type in the thyroid gland, challenging medical understanding that has stood for approximately 150 years. Dr. Özge Acar, Doç. Dr. Ezgi Hacıhasanoğlu, and Dr. Alperen Tuncer. The team successfully defined, photographed, and proved the functionality of this third thyroid cell group, though the newly found type has not yet been given a formal name.
Surgical Approaches and Unexplained Hormone Levels
The findings offer concrete explanations for longstanding clinical mysteries that perplexed endocrine surgeons. For decades, specialists debated why patients who underwent the total removal of all parathyroid glands still did not register zero parathormone levels, and why successful thyroid operations where parathyroid glands were left intact nonetheless triggered unexpected post-surgical hormone drops. Biz cerrahlar bu ameliyatlardan sonra sürekli ‘Bu hastada bir şeyleri eksik mi yaptık’ düşüncesini taşıyorduk,
Prof. Dr. Ayşan noted, explaining that the presence of parathormone-producing cells directly within the thyroid tissue resolves these questions. Rather than viewing post-operative parathormone reductions as a surgical complication, experts now understand it is a natural result of removing these newly recognized cells when the thyroid is excised.

This paradigm shift is expected to alter surgical methodologies. Current medical data frequently favors removing the entire thyroid gland in numerous patients, but because the discovered tissue holds heightened value, future surgical interventions are anticipated to become far more minimal. Surgeons plan to extract less tissue to preserve natural thyroid health. Furthermore, researchers have initiated new investigations exploring whether this cellular discovery can guide the diagnosis and treatment of conditions whose origins remain unclear, including Graves’ disease, Hashimoto’s disease, and specific types of thyroid cancer, though experts emphasize that integrating these laboratory results into international treatment protocols will take time.
Conference and Team Dynamics
The findings were formally presented during a conference titled 150 Yıl Sonra Tiroid Bezinde Yeni Hücre Keşfi
held at the Yeditepe University Koşuyolu Specialized Hospital Conference Hall. Underscoring the collaborative nature of the breakthrough, Prof. Dr. Ayşan stressed that major scientific discoveries stem from wide, multidisciplinary teams rather than individuals. Birlikte olmasaydık ve bir ekip çalışması ortaya koymasaydık asla bu noktaya gelemezdik,
he stated, emphasizing the shared effort behind updating foundational medical literature.
