New COVID Variant: Symptoms, Hospitalizations Rising
New COVID-19 Variant XFG: What You Need to Know (October 20, 2025)
Recent reports indicate a rise in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in several Southeast Asian countries, linked to a new variant designated XFG. While this increase is being closely monitored, current data suggests XFG does not present a greater public health risk than other circulating strains of SARS-CoV-2.
What are the Symptoms of XFG?
The symptoms associated with XFG are largely consistent with those of seasonal influenza and previous COVID-19 variants. Expect to see a range of presentations, including fever, sore throat, nasal congestion, runny nose, and cough. A notable characteristic observed is a particularly severe sore throat, which appears to be a common early indicator. Loss of taste and smell, while still possible, isn’t being reported as frequently as with earlier variants.
For many, the illness remains mild. However, individuals over the age of 75, those with compromised immune systems, and people managing chronic health conditions are at higher risk of experiencing a more severe clinical course.
When to Seek Medical Attention
It’s crucial to be vigilant and seek prompt medical care if you develop concerning symptoms. Do not delay seeking help if you experience any of the following:
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- High fever
Thes symptoms could indicate a more serious complication requiring immediate intervention. While XFG doesn’t appear to be inherently more perilous than other variants, the potential for severe illness remains, particularly within vulnerable populations.
This is an evolving situation, and we will continue to provide updates as more data becomes available. Staying informed and practicing preventative measures - such as vaccination and good hygiene – remain the best defenses against COVID-19 and its variants.
