The University of New Haven is making the jump to Division I athletics, accepting an invitation to join the Northeast conference (NEC). The transition from Division II is slated to begin July 1, marking a significant step for the university’s athletic programs and its overall profile.
NEC Commissioner Noreen Morris and University of New Haven President Jens Frederiksen jointly announced the addition of New Haven as the conference’s 10th full member on Tuesday. the chargers are expected to achieve full Division I status by the 2028-29 academic year, solidifying their place in the conference and the division.
The move to Division I represents a bold step for the university, according to Morris. she added that New Haven shares the NEC’s core values, emphasizing academics, competitive excellence, and a positive student-athlete experience.
New Haven sponsors 20 sports, most of which will be integrated into NEC schedules starting this year. Football’s inclusion in the conference schedule remains under consideration.
During the transition period, new Haven will be immediately eligible to compete in NEC championships for sports without automatic NCAA championship qualifications. By 2028-29, the Chargers will gain eligibility for all NCAA championship competitions.
Stonehill and Le Moyne, two other NEC members, are also currently undergoing transitions to Division I.
