MECHELEN-KATELIJNE – A new nursing post is being established in teh Mechelen-Katelijne first-line zone as part of a Flemish government initiative to alleviate the workload of general practitioners (GPs). The project, one of seven selected, aims to address patient backlogs and long waiting times caused by high GP workloads and physician attrition.
Sven de Bakker, the project coordinator, explained the role of the nursing post. “People can seek advice and receive minor medical care that doesn’t necessarily require a GP,” de Bakker said. “We also assist patients in determining if a GP consultation is truly needed, saving time for both the patient and the doctor. Furthermore, we will collaborate with Digibank to guide patients in accessing their files and health services online.”
Innovative Approach to Primary Care
The nursing post, located in Heembeemd, operates on a model that expands the conventional role of nurses. Sabe De Graef (Vooruit), ships of Zorg, notes the innovative nature of the project. “Current regulations limit the medical services nurses can provide outside of a general practise,” De Graef said. “This project is truly innovative and could set a precedent for the future, making primary care more accessible to the local community.”
De Bakker elaborated on the expanded role. “While home nurses can already provide wound care and vaccinations, we aim to go further,” he said. “Patients can come here with questions about health problems, preventive screenings, and administrative support, such as assistance with population investigations for breast or colon cancer. This allows GPs to focus on more complex treatments and follow-up care.”

The nursing post is collaborating closely with local GPs to ensure it’s success. GP practice De Koeipoort has already joined the initiative, and discussions are underway with other neighborhood practices. Thomas More Hogeschool is also involved, providing student nurses and researchers who will assess the nursing post’s impact on care quality and GP workload.
Aiming for Long-Term Sustainability
The nursing post is scheduled to open to patients in the fall. De Bakker stated that the pilot project is funded until August 2026, with hopes for an extension until February 2027. “We immediately strive for an extension until February 2027, so that general practitioners and other care providers are given enough time to think about a sustainable continuation of the initiative,” he said.
The nursing station is situated in the former local service center De Rooster in the Klein begijnhof, adjacent to the future social restaurant De Refuge. If the model proves successful, regulations could be adjusted, and the nursing post could serve as a blueprint for other cities in Flanders.
Mechelen-Katelijne Pilot Program: Addressing GP Workload with Nursing Posts
Here’s a breakdown of the new nursing post initiative.
What is the mechelen-Katelijne Pilot Program?
The Mechelen-Katelijne Pilot Program is a Flemish government initiative establishing a nursing post to ease the workload of general practitioners (GPs) in the Mechelen-Katelijne first-line zone. This program is one of seven selected to address issues like patient backlogs and long waiting times related to high GP workloads and physician attrition.
Why is this program being implemented?
The primary goal of the program is to alleviate the burden on GPs. increasing workloads and a shortage of physicians have led to backlogs and longer wait times for patients. The nursing post aims to help address these issues.
What services will the nursing post offer?
The nursing post will offer a range of services designed to support both patients and GPs:
Advice and Minor Medical Care: Patients can seek advice and receive minor medical care that doesn’t necessarily require a GP visit.
Triage: Nurses will help patients determine if a GP consultation is truly needed.
Online Health Services Support: The post will collaborate with Digibank to assist patients in accessing their health files and online health services.
Health Questions and Administrative Support: Patients can visit the post with questions related to health problems, preventive screenings, and administrative tasks (e.g., assistance with population investigations for breast or colon cancer).
Where is the nursing post located?
The nursing post is located in Heembeemd.
When will the nursing post open?
The nursing post is scheduled to open to patients in the fall.
What makes this nursing post innovative?
This nursing post expands the conventional role of nurses. Current regulations limit the medical services nurses can provide outside of a general practice.this project is innovative because it allows nurses to provide more extensive care, making primary care more accessible according to Sabe De Graef.
Who is involved in the nursing post initiative?
The initiative involves several key players:
Flemish Government: Providing the funding and overall framework.
Project Coordinator: Sven de Bakker is the project coordinator.
local GPs: GP practice De Koeipoort is already involved, and discussions are ongoing with other neighborhood practices.
Thomas More Hogeschool: Providing student nurses and researchers to assess the project’s impact.
How does this help general practitioners?
By offering services that don’t necessarily require a GP visit, the nursing post frees up GPs’ time. This allows them to focus on more complex treatments and follow-up care.
How is the nursing post funded?
The pilot project is funded until August 2026. There are hopes for an extension until February 2027.
What is the long-term goal of this initiative?
The aim is for the nursing post model to prove successful. If it does, regulations could be adjusted, providing a blueprint for other cities in Flanders to adopt this approach. Lasting continuation of the project is the aim.
