Jeep Revives Cherokee SUV with Hybrid Power to Boost Sales
Updated May 31, 2025
DETROIT — The Jeep brand is banking on the 2025 Cherokee SUV to jumpstart its sales. Unveiled Thursday, the new Cherokee boasts a hybrid powertrain, though Stellantis has not confirmed if it will be a customary or plug-in hybrid. The company aims to make the new Jeep Cherokee SUV a key player in the competitive midsize SUV market.
Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf said the Cherokee will offer more value to customers. He added that its competitive pricing will position it between the Jeep Compass and Grand Cherokee, strengthening Jeep’s core lineup. The focus on affordability addresses a recent challenge for the brand, as rising prices have impacted sales.
The 2022 Cherokee had a starting price around $30,000, according to Cars.com. The 2025 Grand cherokee starts at about $36,500, while the Compass starts at $27,000.The company did not disclose the production location for the new Cherokee. However, analysts believe it will be manufactured in Mexico, a decision predating President Trump’s 25% automotive tariffs.

The previous Cherokee generation was produced in Illinois, but that plant has been idle as early 2023 due to cost-cutting and production adjustments. Discontinuing the Cherokee and the smaller Renegade after the 2023 model year contributed to Jeep’s sales decline. The brand has seen six consecutive years of declining U.S. sales, with a 10% drop in the first quarter of this year.
Incoming Stellantis CEO Anthony Filosa, previously responsible for Jeep’s turnaround efforts, is expected to prioritize the SUV brand. The new hybrid powertrain cherokee is central to this strategy.
”The all-new Jeep Cherokee headlines our efforts to deliver more product, innovation, choice and standard content to customers than ever before,” Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf said.
What’s next
The 2025 Jeep Cherokee’s success will be crucial for Stellantis as it navigates the evolving automotive market and aims to regain market share. The company hopes the new model’s hybrid option and competitive pricing will attract a wider range of buyers.
