Lim Hyun-taek, the new president of the Korean Medical Association, was officially sworn in today.

In his inauguration speech, he continued to advocate hard lines, calling the government’s policy of increasing the number of medical schools “medical agriculture.”

[임현택/대한의사협회 회장 : “2,000명 증원 문제, 그리고 필수의료 패키지 폐기 문제 등을 비롯하여 불합리한 정책들에 대해서는 하나하나 뜯어고쳐….”]

The plan to form a “pan-medical advisory body” in preparation for dialogue with the government has faced opposition from medical specialists and others.

Residents have said they will move on their own, but President Lim appealed for internal solidarity, saying he will continue communication.

The medical community is currently awaiting the court’s final decision on the government’s request for “grounds for a 2,000-person increase.”

The Korean Medical Association said it will provide scientific evidence to show how wrong the policy of increasing troop numbers is, and students from 40 medical schools said: “This is an opportunity for all citizens to verify the validity of the government’s claims.”

The group of medical faculty professors intends to decide the course of action based on the court’s decision.

The government is proceeding with the procedures until the increase is finally approved.

39 medical schools across the country, excluding one, have announced their enrollment numbers for next year.

The total number of people reported by the government is approximately 4,400.

If the capacity of the other venue is confirmed, the final increase expected for next year will be around 1,500 people.

Regionally based national universities reduced the size of the increase by about half, but most private universities reflected the government’s original plan.
