New Research Reveals Link Between Junk Food and Cancer Risk

Junk food refers to unhealthy processed foods, fast foods, carbonated drinks, candy, etc. The word “garbage” itself means “waste” or “rubbish”. Therefore, it has long been accepted as a well-established theory that eating a lot of junk food increases the risk of developing cancer. However, there are no research findings that scientifically prove a direct link.

However, a research team from the National University of Singapore has discovered the missing link. It turns out that when the human body breaks down the sugary and fatty ingredients of junk food, substances are produced that turn off the genes responsible for fighting tumors. This chemical compound called methylglyoxal temporarily disrupts the gene’s ability to prevent cancer cells from forming and growing.

According to research findings, methylglyoxal, which is produced when too much junk food is consumed, inhibits the function of cancer-fighting genes. This is because it destroys genetic proteins and temporarily reduces intracellular contents.

The problem is that although the phenomenon is temporary, it lasts long enough to inhibit the tumor’s preventative function. Repeated exposure to junk food causes fatal damage to genes that prevent cancer.

In particular, if you inherit a faulty gene, methylglyoxal easily inactivates genes that prevent cancer. Since tumor suppression is disabled, it develops rapidly even in a healthy body at a young age. People who suffer from diabetes or pre-diabetes are said to have a higher risk of cancer because they secrete more methylglyoxal.

The results of this study make a revolutionary contribution to cancer prevention and healthy aging by revealing new findings that cancer may be caused by the interaction between genes and dietary habits. This is believed to be the case.
