New Submutant JN.1 of COVID-19 Omicron Rapidly Spreading in the United States, Raises Health Concerns

[뉴욕=뉴스핌]Correspondent Kim Geun-cheol = The Washington Post (WP) reported on the 4th (local time) that “JN.1”, a new submutant of COVID-19 Omicron, is rapidly spreading in the United States, raising health authorities’ concerns .

WP published an article this day titled “COVID-19 infections are spreading as JN.1 has become the dominant species in the United States,” showing that COVID-19 infections are also rapidly increasing as that Americans are returning to work and school after the end-of-year holidays and said the situation is showing signs.

The newspaper explained that the sample level of COVID-19 virus detection in wastewater, which is a measure of COVID-19 virus activity in a specific area, is similar to that of last winter, suggesting that JN.1 it is already prevalent in the United States.

In particular, JN.1 diagnosed that people who have been vaccinated or who had previously been infected become easily infected, making it necessary to once again wear masks in public health facilities in the United States.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said there were 29,000 COVID-19 hospitalizations in the week before Christmas. Although this is a lower number than the 39,000 in the same period last year, the media explained that it must be taken into account that not many people have recently gone to hospital due to COVID-19.

Experts pointed out that although new COVID-19 mutations such as JN.1 have weakened infectivity, COVID-19 infection is still a leading cause of death and the most common cause of hospitalization for respiratory reasons.

The CDC still recommends that people who test positive for COVID-19 quarantine for five days, but in reality many Americans don’t get tested or don’t receive treatment and mistake it for a cold and neglect it, causing the spread of the COVID-19. more easily, WP reported.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) recently classified JN.1 as a “variant of concern”, saying it is rapidly spreading around the world.

The WHO was concerned that cases of JN.1 infection were being reported around the world, including the United States, China, India and the United Kingdom. It also warned that while the public health risk from JN.1 is low, COVID-19 and related infections could increase this winter.

It is known that JN.1 is another mutation derived from BA.2.86, an omicron subvariant.
