New Taipei City Tackles Waste Surge During Chinese New Year

New Taipei City Bracing for Garbage Surge During Chinese New Year

NEW TAIPEI CITY — As the Year of the Golden Snake approaches, New Taipei City is geared up to tackle the annual surge in waste during the Chinese New Year celebrations. The Environmental Protection Bureau (EPB) expects a whopping 3,981 tons of garbage each week, more than double the usual amount.

In preparation for the festive season, the EPB has enforced garbage-free campaigns and promoted resource recovery since 1997. These efforts have led to a remarkable reduction in waste, with daily garbage amounts plunging from 2,497 tons in 1997 to a mere 1,131 tons today.

From the third day of the new year, garbage transportation will pause, but temporary settlements and 70 fixed-point garbage stations will remain open. Residents are advised to use designated garbage bags and sort their waste accordingly. For disposal queries, call the EPB’s hotline at 0800-010-857 or visit the New Taipei Le Worker website (https://CRD-Hab-Ill.Epd.gov.tw/).

The EPB emphasizes the importance of waste sorting to ensure the safety of transport workers and prevent accidents. High-voltage spray bottles, cans, pesticides, and similarly hazardous items should be disposed of via the resource recovery vehicle. Meanwhile, powders and seasonings mixed with water can be treated as kitchen waste.

Last year, incidents of large-scale furniture disposal and indiscriminate garbage dumping marred the celebrations. The EPB calls on the public to uphold environmental hygiene and adheres to waste disposal regulations. Violations may result in fines up to NT$6,000, with repeat offenders potentially facing legal prosecution.

New Taipei City’s thorough waste management strategy ‍during Chinese New year is a model for lasting celebrations. Understanding waste management practices and participating in sorting initiatives are vital for ensuring a clean and healthy habitat during this festive period. ‍
