Should I wear a mask again?

There have been warnings that the COVID-19 virus could spread again this summer.

According to Newsweek on the 9th (local time), ‘FLiRT’, a sub-variant of the mutant COVID-19 virus Omicron, is spreading.

The new variant was named FLiRT because of the location of the mutation in the spike protein.

Lawrence Young, professor of genetics at the University of Warwick in the UK, told Newsweek, “FLiRT was first discovered in a sewer in the United States, but its exact origin is unknown.” He added, “FLiRT variations are spreading not only in the United States but also outside the country’s borders.”

Professor Young cited data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and said, “One of the new FIiRT variants, called KP.2, accounts for 25% of new infections in the US States,” adding, “This makes this variation the cause of the summer infection wave.” “There are concerns that this could cause,” he said.

However, the specific risks have not yet been revealed. Professor Young explained, “The virus may be more infectious than previous variants, but it is too early to say whether it is more dangerous.”

At the same time, he advised, “To prevent infection, try to avoid mixing in crowded and poorly ventilated areas and wear a mask when you are close to people, such as on public transport.”

If infected with FLiRT, symptoms similar to existing Omicron infections may appear, such as fever, chills, cough, difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle and body aches, headache, and loss of taste.
